Spring Gut Glow: Nutrition with Keli

Welcome to The Bridal Hour Podcast! It’s Sophie today, and I’ve met up with the lovely Nutrition with Keli, and we are going to chat all about how brides can find their Inner Glow, and we’re not talking skincare this time…… but Keli’s superpower – Nutrition!

So, in a nutshell, Keli, tell me about yourself and how you can help our brides and your clients?

So, I’m Keli, the founder of Nutrition with Keli. I am a wellness brand designed to help people transform their health from the inside out. So, starting with the gut, of course. So for Brides, this means glowing skin, steady energy, and feeling their absolute best, especially in a lead-up to their wedding.

Brides always come to me and say, what can I do for my skin? I feel like my Skin’s just not glowing, or I’ve got acne or eczema, or I’m just dry and dull. What can they do?

All sorts of things, It’s not necessarily the creams that you’re putting on your face, It’s what your diet and lifestyle are like?

So most Brides quite rightly, focus on skin care products, but true Radiance actually starts from within. So through my nutrition packages, I help women reduce bloating, clear their skin, and boost their confidence with simple and effective nutrition strategies.

Amazing, so how can you help a Bride find their Inner Glow for their wedding day?

So, essentially, your skin is a direct reflection on your gut health. So, that includes your breakouts, dullness. Inflammation often comes from food intolerances.Poor digestion or even an imbalance with your gut microbiome can cause these issues. To find like your Inner Glow, I always say to my clients. Eat anti-inflammatory foods, so prioritize whole unprocessed foods, leafy greens, and omega-3 rich foods.

The second one. This is a really good one. Support your gut microbiome. It’s often forgotten, so those are things like adding your probiotic foods that you prefer,  such as natural yogurt, sauerkrauts, fermented foods. They all help improve your digestion and your skin Health as well. Those are the types of foods that you have to learn to Enjoy!

They’re quite an unusual taste, and only really becoming mainstream now in the supermarket in the UK. If you’ve never been in countries where they’ve always had these foods day in, day out it can be unnatural to add these foods into your diet at first.

For the UK, It is a tough one to get your taste buds around, but I have to say, it’s like, you kind of have to treat yourself like a child again, and just think right, because trust me, these are the ingredients that are really going to help push you so much quicker to help feel better, and help you look incredible.

Keli’s absolutely gorgeous! Your skin is amazing, so it just shows it does help! They are real foods, aren’t they. I think the problem with this country or the West is that convenience is killing us. So, yeah, convenient Foods. My struggle is balancing my work hours with good food choices, it’s a very early start. I’m working for six or seven hours straight without a break at all. Not much chance to eat, and then it’s getting in the car, driving an hour or two home. Oh, where can I stop and get food? Oh, there’s, McDonald’s, and this fast food store.

Like, this is crazy, you know? How has fast food become fashionable? We started doing so well in the UK really, you know, especially during covid, everyone’s became more aware of their diets and cooked at home because they had to, and had to learn how to cook again, you know, find really tasty herbs and spices to make food really flavoursome.

So to go from that to then for like teenagers, then let’s say, because he’s their Idol, they’re looking up to him and thinking, oh wow, he’s actually prepped like a lunch box of his favorite foods from Macdonalds and it has created a demand for teenagers to go more because they’ve got massive fomo. It’s like a limited edition. Apparently, I think I believe so. Because of that, it creates the demand, and these children now want to go. Yeah, and they can get the stormzy box. Like, a badge of honor, which I think is absolutely ridiculous.

You know if you are a celebrity, you’ve got power. He has some great qualities you know, he’s done some incredible charity work. I just think, “ What if ” he had invested his time into something more like Joe Wick’s approach, where he is going to stimulate children and give them the energy to perform on stage for example. He sings in one of his songs about Rice and Stew and that’s more relatable to me! That’s homemade, you know, authentic food!

The other point I would recommend is balancing your blood sugar, so avoiding sugar spikes, as processed foods which can cause breakouts as well.

Most importantly, I would also recommend to hydrate properly, drink plenty of water. You can really level it up by having herbal teas as well, so you get some nice extras in there, and that really helps flush out the toxins.

And again, this is slightly overlooked as well. Reduce your stress.  Deload, Prep, especially on the run up to your wedding. High stress affects your digestion and your skin Health, so incorporate, breath work, yoga, be more mindful about how you go to sleep, do the meditation before you go to sleep or go for a nice evening Sunset walk.

I know it sounds perfect life, you know? It’s not always the case that we can do all these things, but you know if you can prioritize that 20 minutes before bed, you know, create a bedtime routine? Don’t sit on your phone in bed keep devices away.

Very good. I like that one De-stressing. I’ve always been troubled with eczema, since I was a baby, but there was a time about 7 years ago where I didn’t realise how stressed I was. I had started a new job and moved into my first home and I was working myself too work in my new job, early starts and finishing work late. Work hard mentality. My eczema and exhaustion was so bad I could get out of bed, I then had an intolerance test and saw a dermatologist to help me, I cut out a lot of food at the time in order to heal!

When you are under that much stress, suddenly your body can’t tolerate those Foods anymore. It’s crazy, isn’t it? I’ve been through a very similar path to yourself, so I totally resonate with you. Skin health essentially is down to an imbalance. You’ve got microbiome, so it’s that is one of the main conditions associated with it.

I suffered with eczema as well, head to toe. I was in and out of doctors, hospitals, and they always sort of said, it’s so many years cycle for it to end, or you’ll probably grow out of it, absolutely not.

I ate loads of nutritious foods. I cut out my takeaways, drank a little bit less alcohol at the weekends, and this took years to learn what my body needs. Now, when I coach my clients we’re on it. I mean, there’s some parts that are quite gradual for some clients, but mostly nine times out of ten we’ll be using those four weeks wisely and getting to the root cause pretty quickly or trying to find it very, very quickly.

So yeah, I’ve been there. I understand the worries, the concerns, the triggers, how that feels, and how we can make simple swaps or upgrades in foods, for example, lets talk about the bread, from warburtons to genuine bread that’s from the bakery, like freshly baked, makes all the difference.

There’s a stat out there that says, I think roughly supermarket is approximately 70% processed.  If you think about the whole supermarket when you walk in, there’s only one tiny section. It’s often as you walk in. That’s fresh produce. Then its aisles and aisles of ultra processed foods, quick, convenience foods, but that’s the world that we live in.

And I imagine over time that was steadily decrease and will the fresh produce will take over a little bit more. I hope so, I hope so.

I’ve just signed up to The Pot Gang, where you plant seeds and watch them grow into foods to help teach my little boy about whole fresh foods, so we have chives and strawberries growing on our windowsill!

How can a Bride find balance through her Bridal Journey, with all her hen parties, dinners and gatherings?

I would always say it’s all about mindful Indulgence, so don’t restrict yourselves. Life is still for living. I’m totally on board with that, but it’s also about being intentional.

So when I say intentional. It’s things like follow the 80 to 20 rule. Eat nourishing Foods 80% of the time, especially if you can cook at home but enjoy the celebrations totally guilt-free for the other 20% of the time.

When we drink alcohol, hydrate before it, start every event with a large glass of water or herbal tea to avoid bloating and the sluggishness associated with it and it also supports your digestion. I often take a digestive enzyme, which is a type of supplement. You can also have this through food like your kefir, Kiwis, pineapples, papayas, so more sort of tropical types of fruits are really good for it, but if you don’t have those accessible, I often would supplement that just to ease the flow of foods that you’re not used to eating.

Prioritize protein and fiber. So, eating protein Rich meals before heading out helps balance your blood sugar and keeps cravings in check.

And Listen to your body. So, if something leaves you feeling sluggish or inflamed, just adjust accordingly. What can I stop eating, what can I eat instead.

If you didn’t have vegetables in your meal, and it was more of a starchy meal. Essentially, your blood glucose is going to spike. So you need your veggies in there and your protein and your good fats to prevent that. The more steady you’re going to feel, emotionally more balanced. Your energy is going to be more balanced. Everything is going to be more balanced.

Can you give your top five things to do to help our gut and health?

Remove your gut disruptors. Cut down on processed foods, artificial sweeteners, and excess sugar. Eat gut loving foods. So, incorporate your fiber-rich veggies your fermented foods. So, like your probiotics? And healthy fats. Healthy fats such as olive oil, avocados.

Slow down and chew your food! And I mean, really chew roughly about 20-30 per mouthful. Sit down on the table, give yourself 20 minutes or so to enjoy a meal. Take all your devices and electronics away from you and enjoy. Your digestion starts from the moment you look at it, and it enters your mouth like it. All your senses kick off, um, so, yeah, enjoy it. Enjoy those flavors and really chew it.

So we mentioned earlier, that stress directly impacts digestion. So, your daily mindfulness, deep breathing before breath bread? Oh, like I said before, like walking before you go to bed. Enjoy that Sunset. And that really helps keep your gut happy. And finally, optimize your hydration so drink your filtered Waters, your herbal teas get your two to three liters in, depending on your lifestyle and your workouts, you may need to consider adding electrolytes, especially if you train hard.

Tell me more about your Spring Gut Glow Rest programme on 31st March.

It’s gonna be amazing. So essentially, it’s a 10 day structure plan designed to reduce your bloating, clear your skin, and boost your energy. It’s a Girls Club only with a private WhatsApp chat. We can motivate each other for the 10 days, I’ll be sending some inspiring quotes for motivation and some really good expert tips for lifestyle recommendations on how we can improve our sleep and how to de load our stress, which is also essential for our gut health.

It’s just going to be a great celebration like, see you winter! Hello Spring! We’re ready for a reset. We’re gonna feel amazing, and we’re gonna have these 10 days to be fully prepped to and have all this information accessible to get through spring and summer. Feeling amazing, yeah, and have that motivation behind you and, and hopefully, the discipline you know to to pursue it as well.

It’s not necessarily always about exclusion. It’s about you’re leveling it up, like, how can we upgrade these Foods? It’s never no to chocolate. It’s eating better quality foods that don’t have these added extra.

If you’re going to have these treats I would definitely recommend to have them after a meal as well. So, because you’ve full and you’re more satisfied and you’ve had all your fibers, fats, and proteins in there. So you glucose blood sugars are more stable.

So when you come to have the sugar your treats It’s not going to spike as much.

Another really good tip after having a treat like that is going for a quick sort of 20 minute walk so that reduces the glucose Spike.
